Chapter Thirteen

The Avonlea Chronicle office was very quiet as Charlie Pinker sorted through the papers in Olivia’s folder. He picked up a sheet of foolscap and looked at it with interest. Then he glanced over at Olivia, who was sitting at her desk, staring off out the window into space.

“Miss King...?”

Olivia didn’t seem to hear him. Mr. Pinker cleared his throat loudly.

“Ahem! Miss King...?”

Olivia sprang up from her desk, knocking a file of papers from it in the process.

“Yes, Mr. Pinker!”

“Do you want everything in this folder to be printed?” he asked in an overly polite voice as he peered at Olivia over the rim of his glasses.

“Yes, Mr. Pinker,” Olivia said sharply, kneeling on the floor as she gathered the scattered pages, account statements she had compiled to take to the bank that afternoon.

“I wouldn’t want to do anything without your approval, Miss King,” he muttered snidely.

Olivia stood up and straightened her skirt. “I went through them all last night. Just print the paper,” she said tersely. “It has to be out by four o’clock.”

Charlie looked down at the folder and smirked to himself. “Whatever you say, boss.”

“Well that takes care of that, Mrs. Lawson,” said Olivia. “I know you’ll like your new front- page advertisement.”

Olivia put away her notebook with a smile. After the disastrous start to her day, things had certainly improved. She was proud to have wooed their business back after a short absence when they had felt that the Summerside paper could better serve their needs.

Mr. and Mrs. Lawson had been convinced that everyone in Avonlea knew about them anyway, so what was the use of advertising in the local paper? Olivia had persuaded them that the good will would translate into sales, and, besides, new people were coming into Avonlea all the time, and it couldn’t hurt to grab their attention. The Lawson’s first advertisement was due in the afternoon paper, and Olivia could tell just how excited they were by the way Mr. Lawson had kept his eye on the window, watching for the delivery buggy, which was now pulling up to the steps of the general store.

“It’s a pleasure doing business with you, Olivia.” Mrs. Lawson patted her arm. “You must be pretty proud of yourself. So new at the job, and—”

“Here are the papers, right on time....” called Mr. Lawson, his face wreathed in smiles as he carried the bundle into the store and cut the twine that bound them together.

Several customers who had been browsing gathered around him to purchase their copies.

“Edward,” said Mrs. Lawson, “pull one out and let’s take a look at our new advertisement.”

She was as excited as a child on Christmas morning, thought Olivia to herself, smiling.

Mr. Lawson did as he was told, as anxious as his wife. He unfolded it carefully as Mrs.
